Meet the GM - Vancouver

Par Jeff H (Winnipeg Jets) Le Tuesday 29th September 2026 / 8:26pm

Hey everybody it’s Paul Mitchell back with another edition of meet the AHL GM.   Today, we profile Mika Laakso, GM of the Vancouver Canucks.

Mika joined the AHL during the league’s inaugural season as GM of the Detroit Red Wings.  He said the league was a bit different from other leagues that he was in. Mika would eventually step away from the league for a few seasons before returning with a new team, and he has stayed ever since.

A veteran of sim fantasy hockey since 1992, Mika has been in countless leagues over time, but is still looking for his first AHL league title.

A native of Tampere, Finland, Mika  likes to watch TV and read books when he’s not busy managing the Canucks.

Meet the GM - Quebec

Par Jeff H (Winnipeg Jets) Le Wednesday 23rd September 2026 / 2:49pm

Hi everyone, it’s Paul Mitchell back with another edition of Meet the GM.  Today, we profile Samuel Gendron Mallet, the GM of the Quebec Nordiques.
Samuel joined the AHL prior to season 19 as GM of the expansion Nordiques.  After being in another league for 20 years, he was no longer happy in it and wanted to try something new.
His sim hockey experience dates back around 25 years, when he was in his mid-teens. First with the FHL simulator, and now STHS.
The AHL is currently the only league that Samuel is in. He says he tried being in multiple leagues before, but found it hard, adding that he likes to be all in with his team.
He is still looking for his first AHL title, but it’s not for a lack of trying.  Since drafting his expansion team, Samuel has gained a reputation as “Trader Sam”. He figures he has made 77 trades in that time, including 34 trades in the first season. He admits that he is more patient now, since he has acquired all the players he needs.
A native of Montreal, Samuel is a Communications Specialist and Public relations specialist, which includes updating the website and  making social media posts for the company he works for.
When not working or fine tuning his juggernaut Nordiques, Samuel likes playing video games. But he admits he does not play them as much these days as he spends more time with his three daughters, and trying to enjoy life as much as possible!

Meet the GM - Vegas

Par Jeff H (Winnipeg Jets) Le Wednesday 23rd September 2026 / 2:48pm

Hi everyone, it’s Paul Mitchell back with another edition of Meet the AHL GM. This week, we profile Vegas GM Martin Couture.
Martin joined the league in 2018 during season six, on the encouragement of fellow co-worker and Chicago GM Maxime Plasse.
A veteran of sim hockey for about 15 years, Martin took a non-playoff team in the first league that he was in, and within three seasons brought them to the league final.
While still looking for his first AHL pro league title, Couture is a former farm league champion. He is also a former AHL GM of the year, an honour that means a lot to Martin, as it was voted on by his peers in the league.
A native of Montreal for 23 years, the 47-year-old Couture has lived his entire life in the province of Quebec.
Martin works for Purolator in Montreal, along with fellow AHL GM’s Jo (Calgary) and Scott (Detroit), and formerly with Max (Chicago).
A fan of hockey, wrestling, and NFL football, Martin was a former hockey player and bowler, who now enjoys going to microbreweries, travelling, visiting family, and barbecuing

Meet the GM - NY Islanders

Par Jeff H (Winnipeg Jets) Le Wednesday 23rd September 2026 / 2:46pm

Hi folks, it’s Paul Mitchell back with this week’s edition of Meet the AHL GM. Today, we profile Jose Oliveira, GM of the New York Islanders.
Jose joined the AHL in early 2017 as an expansion GM. He got his start in fantasy hockey in the early 2000s, getting his start in sim hockey leagues with the TFNHL, before moving on to various other leagues over time. He particularly enjoys joining leagues that are either just starting, or expanding, preferring the opportunity to draft his own team.
Still looking for his first AHL pro league title, Jose thinks he has done better at the farm level.
His most memorable moment in the league was when a fellow GM signed one of his RFA’s in Neal Pionk. The compensation he received was a 1st round pick, which Jose used to select Mason McTavish.
Hailing from Laval, Quebec, Jose recently retired after spending over 40 years in the sheet metal industry.
Besides his fantasy hockey GM duties, Jose also enjoys hitting the golf driving range, and collecting sports cards.  He has yet to get any of his cards graded, and will no longer buy cards if the transaction is done by mail. Jose also used to ride bicycles a lot, but has not done it in years due to the increase in vehicle traffic.

Meet the GM - Carolina

Par Jeff H (Winnipeg Jets) Le Wednesday 23rd September 2026 / 2:45pm

Hey everyone, it’s Paul Mitchell back with another edition of Meet the AHL GM. Today, we profile the league’s newest GM in Carolina’s Dennis Reghenas.
Dennis joined the league this past offseason on the recommendation of another GM, after he dropped out of a league where the was getting harassed.
A 20-year veteran of fantasy hockey, Dennis is currently in a number of leagues.  A few highlights include winning the championship last year in the HBHL. He also has the pleasure of being in two leagues with his daughter, and helping her out and watching her enjoy hockey and fantasy has also been very satisfying.
Hailing from Starwood, British Columbia in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Dennis works in the Canadian Oil sands for Imperial/Esso/Exxon.
When not busy with work or fantasy hockey, Dennis usually can be found enjoying the backcountry with his horses, dogs, and family, as well as Hunting, Fishing, Shedhunting, and huckleberry picking.
